I am currently trying to get my own apartment. I have about ₦3m in my savings, and I’ve estimated that it’ll cost ₦1.5 - ₦2m to get a reasonable place in Lagos. The issue right now is that I am unemployed (lost my job some months ago), and also pursuing a Masters Degree. I wonder how I’d survive if I used most of my savings to get a place. I don’t have any options though; I have to leave where I’m staying really soon. I really don’t want to return home to my parents in the east. I’d feel like a failure. I’m doing my very best to apply for jobs but nothing is clicking yet. I’m at my wits end. What do you suggest I do? - Jennifer, 22
Hi Jennifer,
I'm sorry you're navigating this. The mental weight of job hunting, house hunting, and a master's degree simultaneously is no small thing. But I'll be straight with you: go back to your parents' house.
I know that's not what you were hoping to hear, but let me explain why it's the smartest move right now. You're juggling three enormous things at once, something will give, and it shouldn't be your degree, your mental health, or your savings.
Here's what spending ₦1.5 - ₦2 million on rent right now actually looks like: you move in, you're relieved briefly, then you're alone in an apartment with dwindling savings, no income, and the same job hunt still ahead of you. And that's before agency fees, furnishing, and feeding, your real spend will likely exceed your ₦2 million estimate. When your savings run low, desperation sets in, and desperation leads to you accepting jobs below your worth just to survive.
Going home changes the equation entirely. There's a roof, there's stability, and your ₦3 million stays intact, thereby giving you real leverage to negotiate, wait for the right job opportunity, and finish your degree without financial panic.
I know you see this as failure, but I assure you it isn’t. You’re being strategic and proactive. Once you land the right job, you can return to Lagos on your own terms, with enough to do it properly. I’m rooting for you!
Xoxo, Mo
