Ask Aunty M with Mo
I currently earn ₦150,000. What low cost investment can I do? Due to the hike in fares, I tend to not pay my tithes and even help my loved ones. I spend over ₦60k on transport fares. But I have saved ₦15k every month since I started working this year. I would also add that I'm usually low on cash before the last few days in every month. Please enlighten me on how to be prudent and just live within my means. - Tomi, 25
Hi Tomi,
Firstly, I’m glad you are aware of your situation; that’s usually the first step to greatness.
Also, I’m so happy that you’re even thinking of savings during this period. That’s good! Now to the real deal, honestly, at ₦150,000 with ₦60,000 going to transport alone, the margins are too thin for conventional investment advice to mean much. So let me be straight with you: the best investment you can make right now is in yourself.
Look around and ask, what skill, if I spent the next 1-2 years building it, would make me significantly more valuable? Tech, creative skills, a trade; whatever aligns with your interests and the market. Learn it, practice it, build with it. There are free and affordable resources you can use to build yourself, and if you have to pay for them, by all means do. Document your journey, which you can use to build yourself and earn some money.
You're still early in your career, which means you have the most important thing: time. Use this season to grow your earning capacity, because that's what changes everything else — the savings, the giving, the breathing room before month-end.
More income solves what a tighter budget cannot.
Xoxo, Mo
